APA citation generator for references and in-text citations
Flawless Academic APA Citation Generator
Create an APA-style reference and a matching in-text citation from the details you provide. The generator is aimed at student papers and manuscripts that follow the current APA Publication Manual. It formats the elements you enter. It does not look up a source you only half remember.
Best results come from a DOI or ISBN. For a web page, add the author, date, page title, site name, and URL. Missing dates should stay missing — do not invent a year.
Source types
- Journal article
- Book
- Dissertation
- Webpage
- Report or other publication
Check before you submit
Italics, capitalization of titles, and the “&” versus “and” rule are easy to get wrong. Compare one entry with the sample for that source type in the APA manual or your university guide. The generator is an aid, not the official manual.
If the paper itself needs an originality pass, use the plagiarism checker.
Practical tips for APA references
An APA citation generator formats the fields you give it. It will not invent a real page range. The reliable path is a DOI or an ISBN, then a proof against the APA Publication Manual or your department guide. Use an APA 7 citation generator for the pattern — author, date, title, source — and keep a sample entry open for the same source type. One worked example prevents a whole reference list from drifting.
Collect the elements before you open the tool. For a journal article: author surnames and initials, year, article title, journal title, volume, issue if shown, page range or article number, and DOI. An APA reference generator cannot repair a wrong year. For a book: publisher, edition if not the first, and DOI if one exists. For a page: author, date, title, site name, and URL. A DOI citation generator path is better than a URL path when both exist. Prefer the DOI.
In-text citations
The reference list and the in-text citation have to match. An in-text citation generator should give you the parenthetical and the narrative form: (Lee & Ortega, 2021) and Lee and Ortega (2021). APA uses “and” in the sentence and “&” in parentheses. A parenthetical citation generator that uses “and” inside the brackets is wrong for APA 7 even if the names are right. Three or more authors become “et al.” from the first citation in APA 7. Do not copy an APA 6 pattern from an old handout.
Missing data stays missing. No date is “n.d.”, not a guessed year. No author is the title in the author slot, shortened in text. A website citation generator that fills “Admin” or “Unknown” is guessing. Group authors need the full name on first use if your guide says so. Page numbers belong on direct quotes. A free APA citation generator will not know the page if you did not enter it. Add the locator yourself: (Lee, 2021, p. 14) or (Lee, 2021, para. 4) for a page without numbers.
Proofing the list
Italics: journal and book titles are italic; article titles are not. Capitalization: article and book titles use sentence case; journal titles use title case. A reference list generator often gets one of those wrong when the source metadata arrived in title case. Fix it. Hang the indent if your format requires a hanging indent. Order the list alphabetically by the first author’s surname, not by the order you read the papers. An APA format generator output pasted under a heading is still your list to sort.
Check the DOI link. It should resolve. A citation machine for APA style line with a broken DOI is a broken reference, however neat the punctuation. Retracted papers still need care: cite the retraction if that is what you are discussing, not the original claim as if it stood. After the list is stable, scan the paper with the plagiarism checker. A perfect reference list does not clear a paragraph that was copied above it. Quote, paraphrase, and cite are three separate steps. The generator only helps the third.
Keep a plain-text copy of the final list. Word processors sometimes drop italics on paste. If you move from the APA 7 reference generator into a slide, shorten the talk track, but leave the full entry in the handout. Markers look for the entry they can retrieve, not for the tool that formatted it.
Secondary sources need their own pattern. If you read about a study only inside a textbook, cite the textbook, not the study you did not open. An APA citation maker will happily format the study if you type its author in, and that entry will be false. Edited books need the chapter author and the book editor; a book citation generator APA line with only the editor misses the chapter. After the list is done, search the paper for every author surname in the citations and confirm each one appears in the references, and the reverse. Orphan entries are the usual last defect.
APA citation generator FAQ
Does the generator follow APA 7?
It applies common APA 7 reference patterns to the fields you enter: author, date, title, and source. Proof italics, capitalization, and the “and” versus “&” rule against your style sheet. The tool is not the Publication Manual.
What if the source has no date or no author?
Leave the gap. No date is “n.d.”, not a guessed year. No author means the title moves into the author position. Do not accept a filled-in name such as “Admin” unless that name is on the page.
Should I use the DOI or the URL?
Use the DOI when the source has one. Add a URL for a page that has no DOI. After formatting, open the DOI link and confirm it resolves to the work you cited.
Does a correct reference list clear a plagiarism match?
No. The reference fixes retrieval. It does not license a copied paragraph above it. Quote, paraphrase, and cite are separate steps. Scan the body if the paper will be submitted.
